The Replacement Window Process
Quality replacement window companies will explain, as part of the sales process, how to prepare your home and what to expect when the window installers arrive.
Preparing your home for the replacement windows involves removing valuables from the walls and furniture in the affected areas. You will also be asked to develop a plan for pets and children to keep them safe. Wall coverings will have to be removed and furniture moved unless the replacement window company has agreed to provide the service. Lastly access to the home during the working days will need to be arranged.
The removal and replacement process is not the major surgery it is assumed to be. Your installers should use drop cloths to protect floors and carpets and clean up after themselves after every window and at the end of each day. If you home has exterior trim, it will be removed, the old window will be cut loose and removed. The new window will be mounted, shimmed and sealed. New exterior trim will be applied and the interior will be finished as was specified in the installation contract. As a good rule of thumb, a quality window installer will be able to remove and replace two to four windows/doors in an average workday. The “block frame” companies can approach ten windows a day.
At this point, all that will be left in the replacement window process will be to paint any new trim and the interior casing or wood frames, where applicable. You should be offered the opportunity to paint yourself or have that performed for you as part of the contract. On aluminum-clad or all-wood windows, it is important to apply a quality stain or paint as soon as possible to protect the wood and preserve your warranty.
